Be like water.
This is a common theme in Eastern traditions — to be like water. Water can be strong and powerful and destructive. It can also be agreeable and adaptable and “willing.”
Water generally does not become willful about the way things “should” be. Instead, water adapts to things in its path. It goes around, over, or through without objecting to the obstacle.
We can learn a lesson from water. When one path is blocked, we just change directions and take another path. It is wasted energy to stop and get angry about the blocked path, and argue that it “should not” be that way.
“Willingness” is being open to what is. It is the opposite of “Willfulness,” which is imposing our will on others or the environment. If we are trying to control situations, we are being willful.
