Cognitive distortions, or more simply known as “thinking errors,” occur quite frequently. They bridge the gap between our beliefs (often negative and maladaptive) and feedback from the environment that does not support our beliefs.
For example, if we believe ourselves to be ugly, and we receive compliments on our appearance, we could use a cognitive distortion in order to make sense of the situation and create harmony between two opposing views. “Discounting the Positive””would do the work. Maybe “Magnification” or “Labeling” could be applied here.
Think of situations where you may have used a cognitive distortion. Watch the video, it may give you some ideas.
