“Name it and tame it” is the theme today. Name your emotion and it will subside. Sometimes emotions are clamoring to be heard. When we acknowledge them and put a name to them, they quiet down. Often, that is all it takes — we acknowledge the fear, disappointment, sadness, or whatever emotion we are experiencing, and it immediately subsides.
One scientific explanation for this is that by naming the emotion, we transfer it from the limbic center of the brain to the cognitive center. Since we have control over the cognitive center, we can now control the emotion.
